The Lights at the End of the Tunnel

The lights at the end of the tunnel 1

Winters are getting harder and harder. I quite like the way cold feels on my skin, and I like the aesthetics of grey skies and wet ground and stripped back branches. But...

But.

The cold is getting more painful each year, and harder to endure. Even harder to deal with is the lack of motivation. Everything is too hard - cooking, photography, creativity, you name it, I don't have the energy or the endurance to do it. Hell, I can't even keep my mood up.

The problem with living in the moment is that the moment is your experience of the world. It's all very well to tell myself that come spring, this lethargy and disgust will pass, and I'll have the will and the motivation to photograph, and to make something. At the moment, I feel blank and empty, a talentless nothing trudging through life. I can't even see in photographs, when my vision is taken up by pain, and the twitching in my fingers and toes to make an image is supplanted by the burning of outraged nerves.

It's not good.

So I pushed myself out, with camera and tripod and crutches, and went to make some pictures. Oddly enough, even intending to work out my angst in some suitably angsty and nihilistic photos, they still came out strangely serene. Ominous, yes, but the serenity is definitely there. I wonder what that says about me?

One thing I know; it's given me some ideas. I think my fingers are twitching. I just hope the cold holds up long enough for me to make the most of it.

Singapore by Night

Singapore by Night - Durians resplendant

Still, even when I could barely move out of the hotel room, as soon as night fell I could limp onto our balcony, and make photos of a view like this.

Stunning.

Singapore's a surprising city. Not as prissy as it was seven years ago when I was last there; it's become clean and gracious and very, very modern - even down to proudly displaying its history as 'heritage'. I love it.

Shadow 1

Shadow 1

Rocking-horse at night.

*grins* I realised that at night, everything is a shadow except the lights. This may be a fun week. Of course, whether or not the photos are any good is another matter. I expect to enjoy making them!

Extra 6

Extra 6

Under the railway line, Enmore.

Believe it or not, this was taken for Stone week, not Night. It obviously enough wasn't especially stone-like, so you see it here instead of in the week it was taken.

Extra 1

Extra 1

House on the corner, Newtown.

Another one from the Night sequence, this is. I realy liked it, but didn't find a way to include it in its proper week... so you're getting it now. This is a prettily colourful house during the day, but at night, as you can see, it glows.

As you can see, I'm still well and truly infatuated with night photography.

SIDE NOTE:
The computer I'm using while I'm away doesn't seem to like showing images. I've checked and triple checked the links, and they seem fine, so I'm hoping it's just the vaguaries of an older machine. If anyone else is not seeing the photos, comment, please, so I know it's not just me. Actually, I'd quite like it if you'd comment if you CAN see them too, so I can stop worrying.

Thanks!

Night 7

Night 7

Underpass, Enmore.

I've really, really enjoyed Night week. It's a little sad to be moving on, although I've got another theme I plan to have fun with for next week. And I'm not going to stop shooting night photos - I even have a non-native bearer turning up next week to lug things for me and keep me company during long exposures. I wonder if he realises quite what he's in for...

Night 6

Night 6

Traffic, King Street.

A traffic shot was inevitable, really! How could I have night week without one? I'd really like to play with star trails - it's one of the things I'd planned for night week. But, of course, the entire week has been cloudy. Typical! Maybe tomorrow, if we're lucky. Cross your fingers for me!

Night 5

Night 5

Lennox St

This... now this is night photography. Cinematic, garish colours and eerie stillness. I swear, behind that wall, someone is murdering Cindy Sherman.

Night 4

Night 4

Silos and trainlines, Newtown.

Yes, it's horribly out of focus. And a touch on the slanty side. But I adore this shot, so I'm sharing it anyway. My poor little EOS struggles to focus in low light, even with my beloved 17mm lens, so I usually let it do the best it can, then switch to manual. Unfortunately, with a tiny viewfinder, I struggle in low light too!

Still, the focus isn't really the point of this picture - it's the colours, and the drama of the clouds and the light. So perhaps I should pretend the blur was intentional, yes?

Theme for the week starting Monday, December 3rd...

...is NIGHT.

Since I had so much fun with Wednesday's shot, I decided I'd keep going. Of course, being a mascochist, I'm not waiting until I get a remote trigger for the camera. Oh no, we're oldschool here!

Many thanks, as well to Xole and Mr Fluffy, who showed me how to hack blogger and get wider windows for my photos. Hopefully people will no longer have to click through to the galleries to see the full sized pictures!

Urban 4

Urban 4

Pedestrian tunnel at night, Enmore.

Note: This is another pic that Blogger has cropped. Please click through to see the full photo - I really like this one!

I'm discovering I really like night photography. Tonight I headed out at dusk, hopping down the road with the tripod hanging out of my bag and occasionally banging me on the arm (I've now gotten the knack of using the bang to push it back into place for a few more hops. I got down to the tunnel, set myself up at the top of the steps, took two pictures at the Newtown end of the tunnel before coming down here to do the stuff I wanted to do... and the camera battery died.

I sighed, packed myself up, hopped up the hill, charged the battery for half an hour, then repeated the whole process again. Success! I love night photography. I am, however, going to invest in a backup battery, and take the folding stool. Those 30 second exposures are ouch on my good foot.

The lovely Xole of Succulent Obsession has kindly offered to help me tweak blogger so it stops cropping my pictures for me, so hopefully your clicking reflexes won't get overused for too much longer!

Motion 5

Motion 5

Newtown at dusk.

Playing with night photography is fun! It's not something I've done before - I'm planning on doing more of it. That being said, this is the theme I've found the hardest . I'm only just starting to get ideas about things to do - and it's already Friday! I knew this theme would be a challenge, and I've been learning a lot from it. Hopefully I can come up with something interesting for tomorrow and Sunday as well.

What have people thought of this week's shots so far?
