Over in the Feedbag

If you've been wondering what's become of me the last week or so, I have another blog going. It's inspired by a food co-op I'm part of - a bunch of us make fortnightly trips very early out in the morning to the produce markets out at Flemington, then divide the resulting tonne of fresh vegies, fruit, and often meat & dairy products, between the individual members.

Because what we get each week depends on what's fresh and in season, it's hard to predict exactly what we'll get in each box. And since we're all an adventurous lot, there's usually at least one item we wouldn't usually buy, just for the fun of it. We've all become quite inspired by all this delicious food, and at least one other person has started up his own blog to talk about the things he's cooking - you can see it over on Inner City Cook.

So I've started writing about my feedbag adventures, complete with recipes, rambles about ingredients, and the occasional digression off to tea, wholefoods, and whatever else takes my fancy.

And, of course, there's lots of food photography.

Now that there's more than a couple of posts there, pop over to the Feedbag have a read, if you're interested in good food, or fresh produce. And naturally, I'll still be here discussing photography as well.

Soup for dinner.

It was tasty, too - spicy tomato and lentil, with an afternoon to sit on the stove and gather flavour. We had it over mashed potato, since M. doesn't handle gluten well. Very winter-warm and comforting.

Porcina 7

Porcina 7

The end of all things...

It's only fitting, I suppose, that an imitation pig should turn into imitation sausage and not-bacon.

She was very, very tasty. Vale Porcina!

Soupa pig!

Seems I can't even have a bowl of soup without some piggy getting her nose in the trough.

Cleaned bare.

Turns out it's not a hangover, it's a migraine; or I'm coming down with something, one of the two. The light hurts my eyes, and the smell of food... well, it's not good.

I should eat, but I'm grateful that the Interloper has gotten in first.

Ok, so today's post is late. And hungover. Not that I actually drank much, mind you, but when you've had as big a week as I did, and are on as much medication as I am, it doesn't take much to have you feeling like death the next day.

Live still looks much better once you're seeing it through an empty coffee cup.

The Model's Meal.

This photo is in honour of my dear friend Michelle, and her entirely normal appetite.

Bunny + Blowtorch = ...

It's that time of year again. Lindt chocolate bunnies have hit the supermarket, and I'm trying various alternatives to see what I want to do for this year's bunnyshoot. The smell of burning chocolate reminded me this was also food, so I thought y'all might like to see what I do with my free time. Can you smell the cooking sugar?

PS: you can see last year's bunny weirdness here.

Bento lunch - before and after.

This is leftovers, believe it or not; after all the hassle yesterday, we got takeaway, and there was plenty left for lunch.. as you can see!

Food 2

Fruit salad of melons and orange, with raspberry-yogurt sauce.

Fruit's my most common dessert, these days. I'm usually content to chop it up and wolf it down, though; especially watermelon. I love watermelon. The presentation was the interloper's idea, and the raspberry sauce. Sooooo tasty. (Comment if you want the recipe)

Y'all nearly got a very different picture tonight. I woke up this morning, got ready for work, and as I was hunting for my bag to hop out the door, I noticed that a window was open... with a chair lined up against the wall beneath it.

Some bastard had grabbed a chair from out back, climbed in the window... and nicked my bag. Which meant my wallet, keys, medication... all gone. On top of some very bad family news, and with my partner overseas, having some dog-munching camel-humper in my house really seemed the final straw. I sat in a corner and cried for a bit, then started calling the police and canceling cards.

I was really angry, and feeling bereft, so you almost had a picture of an empty plate with a few angry crumbs in it. But some very dear friends piled on the sympathy and offers of lifts and loans and love, and the sun came out this afternoon. And in the end, events are just events, no matter what the emotions we hang on them.

And watermelon is sweet and crunchy, and the lychee sake you can't see there is cold and smooth and faintly sweet. And life is life, after all.

Tasty dinner from the Interloper.

I'm vegetarian, for those of you who didn't know - and so's dinner. I found a strange new not-sausage the other day, and brought some home to try. This is what the Interloper did with it; it's so nice having a culinary house guest!

Incidentally, it was tasty not-sausage; we'll have to have it again some time.

Theme for the week starting Monday 18th February, 2008...

... is FOOD.

Aptly enough, this post is late as I went out to eat last night, then had net troubles when I got home. It was a tasty meal; I should have taken my camera!
