Pattern 7

Pattern 7

Trunk, palm tree.

Oddly enough, this theme has proved more difficult than I expected. I thought it would be easy to track pattern and repetition in objects, and picked 'Pattern' to give myself a simple week.

It could just be that my mobility has been even more restricted than usual, and also that I've been finding it increasingly hard to get out of bed or off the couch. It was more than that, though.

It would have been simple enough to take pictures of the repeating tiles on the fireplace, or the sponged-on textures on the lounge room walls.... but they made boring photos. And by the end, I found I no longer knew what a pattern was.

What is repetition and deliberate design, and what is a random collision? I'm still not sure. Are you?

Pattern 4

Pattern 4

Pattern recognition.

Looking at it, I could have blocked out even more of the logo, and we all still would have recognised what the Interloper and I have been drinking. Scary, how subconscious brand recognition is.

Pattern 3

Pattern 3

Tarmac, Brisbane airport.

I was thinking about patterns today. We naturally look for patterns everywhere, whether it be the patterns of symmetry in shadow and light, or we're seeking similarity in line, or whether we find patterns from an idea of extrinsic meaning, like today's picture.

It looks like a random assortment of lines, but we assume they have meaning, since presumably (hopefully!) they're there to guide airplanes in safely, and guide the ground crew around them. Still, without knowing that you're looking at an airport runway, would you assume these lines had meaning, or not?

Pattern 2

Brisbane from the air.

I took this on Christmas day 2007, flying back to Sydney in time for a friendly ocean of people to descend on our house. I've had the Pattern theme in mind for some time, you see, and it seemed such a perfect example.

Pattern 1

Pattern 1

Bananas, bananas, and more bananas.

I don't like bananas - they're a bizarre mix of squishy and astringent. But I really like the way they look en mass.

Theme for the week starting Monday January 14th, 2008...

Thinking about it, 'Escape' wasn't the best choice for a week as bad as the one I had last week. I promise far fewer depressed or desperate photos this week, honest.

I've given myself something fun for this week:

... PATTERN.
